From Brush to Stylus: 50 Shades of Grey

Made you look. :)

This is a very quick monochromatic sketch I did on the computer. It started as a practice exercise to make an imaginary landscape. I stuck to shades of grey (or raw umber, to be more accurate), so I only had to think about shapes and values, not colour. I added the figure in the end for some drama.

I'm still so amazed and pleased with how fast you can 'paint' on a computer. The digital medium seems ideal for practicing painting from your imagination. You can play with cool effects and images, and if you don't like them, with a few clicks they're gone and you can try again. It frees you up to experiment.
